Today I Love the long way home...Slice of Life 2014 Day 7

I'm still slicing along with the good folks at Two Writing Teachers as part of their Slice of Life Writing Challenge. I am again giving poetry a fair shake this Friday, long day, evening.  Be kind, please!

I'm also listening to "Take the Long Way Home" by Supertramp on my Pandora radio, which may or may not be helping!  I had a serious conversation about plagiarism with my students today, so I want to make sure that I mention this inspiration that may or may not work its way into my own work.  I have always loved taking the long way home, but I do not like it when others take the long way home when I am waiting on them..

Where Were You?

I waited for you,
I longed for you,
I despaired of ever seeing you again,
I began to have a recurring nightmare
that is was Autumn and

November was just
around the corner

and we still had the

whole
long
snowy
winter

yet to come

I thought I saw you
once
but I was
mistaken

You took the long way home
You tarried here and there
On this page and that on
Facebook
Until I thought maybe
you
had
forgotten
me

I dreamt of you
I even wept for you
I began to imagine we were living in Narnia,
"always winter, but never Christmas"
but we'd already had our holiday and

the snow just
kept coming

and it seemed as if the

whole
long
snowy
winter

was yet to come

but...

I thought I saw you
today
and
was
right

You did weave and wander
your long way
home
And you did tarry
where
I do not really know

But today I know
that you
did
not
forget
me

I dreamt of you
I waited for you
I longed for you
And today I wept
tears of joy over you

as
you
returned
to
me

Today I Love the SUN!

  1. I enjoyed the way you built up to the final lines. Enjoy the time together!

    1. Thanks! Now if it will just stick around long enough for me to get my toes out of my shoes and into sandals I will be REALLY happy! :)

  2. Your use of single words on lines is very effective, as is you repetition of "whole long snowy winter." I often need a push to write in poetic formats, too often falling into my narrative habit... Thank you for the reminder of how refreshing this can be

    1. Thanks! I love poetry, but writing poetry sometimes scares the peejeebers out of me! So...off I go to conquer that fear!
