Today I Love...my red front door - Slice of Life 2014 Day 15

Thanks to the good people at Two Writing Teachers for sponsoring the Slice of Life Story Challenge.  Today is Day 15!

Today I Love My Red Front Door

A few years ago
 we painted
our front door.
It used to be a
dull
boring
blue.
Now it is a
homey,
 cranberryish,
 Christmassy,
 Memorial Day
 and 4th of July
all
rolled
into
one
 red.
It is the first thing
 that catches my eye
 as I near home
at the end of the day.
  It beckons to me
 and says things like,
'Ahhh, there you are',
and
'Where've you been?'
and
'I've been waiting
just for you'
to
come
home.
Tonight the spring
sunset
is setting the
red ablaze
and helping me
to remember that
even warmer days
are on the way.
It is warm
to the touch
and
I just want to
bask in its
reflected light.

  1. I love red for a front door too. I think it says all those things you included. I remember a friend who bought a house in one of those communities where every house looks the same, and they are all painted an earth tone color. After four years of living there, one day she got tired of it and painted her door red. It was very helpful for anyone who wanted to visit--they knew exactly which house was hers.

  2. "I just want to bask in it's reflected light" :-). Love this line and " how the Sunnis setting it ablaze". Love the way light and color changes with the days, weather, seasons. . .

  3. Trish,
What a beautiful poem about your door. The way it is all of those holidays rolled into one makes it seem like a gift, or maybe a celebration.

  4. This was just beautiful. Such simple things can bring such joy to our lives! I loved how your poem about a door mimicked the "shape" of a door: tall, long, and skinny.

  5. This poem could even go without a picture, you have described it so beautifully!

  6. I like how you made your door talk and have the dull blue and the best red but it was a really good poem
